چکیده

This paper extends some of the previous work on synaptically generated traveling waves from one dimension to two dimensions. Numerical simulations of networks of the so-called theta neurons were used for exploration of the existence, stability and the nature of these waves. The symmetric nature of the traveling waves was justi"ed and a numerical scheme for evaluating the velocity of the traveling waves was constructed. Adding adaptation in the network and imposing special initial conditions gave rise to spiral waves. Moreover, adding delays allowed the formation of the traveling lurching waves. Finally, direction for future work is suggested. 2001 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.

Stimulus-Locked Traveling Waves and Breathers in an Excitatory Neural Network

We analyze the existence and stability of stimulus-locked traveling waves in a onedimensional synaptically coupled excitatory neural network. The network is modeled in terms of a nonlocal integro-differential equation, in which the integral kernel represents the spatial distribution of synaptic weights, and the output firing rate of a neuron is taken to be a Heaviside function of activity. Give...

Traveling Theta Waves in the Human Hippocampus.

The hippocampal theta oscillation is strongly correlated with behaviors such as memory and spatial navigation, but we do not understand its specific functional role. One hint of theta's function came from the discovery in rodents that theta oscillations are traveling waves that allow parts of the hippocampus to simultaneously exhibit separate oscillatory phases. Because hippocampal theta oscill...

Regular Traveling Waves in a One-Dimensional Network of Theta Neurons

This paper focuses on regular traveling waves, or waves that propagate smoothly, in a one-dimensional network of theta neurons. We show that when coupling strength is sufficiently large, there exist two traveling wave solutions for this network. Moreover, the cells in the network spike more than one time after joining the wave; that is, some form of synaptic depression or other adaptive mechani...

Traveling waves in a one-dimensional integrate-and-fire neural network with finite support connectivity

We study the existence of traveling waves in a one-dimensional network of integrateand-fire neurons with finite support coupling. We show that when the reset after spiking is sufficiently low, the interspike intervals (ISIs) for a traveling wave with an explicit first wave front can be computed. Further, we analytically derive a self-consistency equation that generates an explicit dispersion re...

Multiple-spike waves in a one-dimensional integrate-and-fire neural network.

This paper builds on the past study of single-spike waves in one-dimensional integrate-and-fire networks to provide a framework for the study of waves with arbitrary (finite or countably infinite) collections of spike times. Based on this framework, we prove an existence theorem for single-spike traveling waves, and we combine analysis and numerics to study two-spike traveling waves, periodic t...
